I just had yet another person inform me that 'Websites are dead. everybody uses Facebook, so that's where I promote my business'.

There is discussion as to the pros and cons regarding this. Here are some facts to consider:

  • Your website is your storefront and shows you are serious. It is yours alone. It shows you are a trustworthy business, not someone selling from the trunk of a car.
  • Facebook postings or pages do not rank well in search engines. A properly optimized website will reach FAR more people who are actually looking for what you offer.
  • Facebook is very limited in how you structure your content. A website gives you full control of how much you want to say, and in an organized manner that your visitors will love.
  • Face it, a Facebook page looks like a Facebook page, while a website can reflect your colors, your style, etc.
  • Analytics. Facebook does offer some limited analytics, but with a website, you have access to much more detailed statistics about your visitors - valuable information you can use to alter your marketing methods to maximize results.
  • Your Facebook business page will have ads showing - often from your competitors. The perception that you're using a free page, but they are paying, may cause some to follow the ad to your competitor's page.

So yes, it's generally a good idea to create a Facebook business page, but only as an extension of your website. Without a business website, you are missing out. When is the last time you searched Facebook for a product or service? People go to Google and find websites, not Facebook pages. And, most shocking news of all, there are a lot of people who do NOT use Facebook at all. These are also potential customers who would otherwise miss out on your business offerings.
